Aerial Photography

Aerial photography is capturing photographs from above in the sky. Aircraft, helicopters, blimps, drones, etc are some of the mediums to help photographers catch some alluring pictures.

An aerial photograph is very different from the regular Photographs, as it gives you the ‘birds-eye view’ of the objects.

Isn’t that interesting?

Now the question is that from where did this astonishing technology begin?

Well, to get an answer to this, we need to glance back into the history of Aerial Photography.

History of Aerial Photography

Back in 1858, a person named ‘Nadar’ took pictures of the ground from the rising balloon. That image was the first Aerial shot taken in history.
Aerial photography proved to be extremely helpful during the time of World war I.

Airplanes were used to capture the images of territories of enemies and to determine their movements. This technology got acknowledged as a useful tool for military officials. After the war, aerial photography gathered even more limelight. This technology was then being used for nonmilitary purposes. Maps were made by capturing aerial shots, and information regarding topography, vegetation, culture, etc. could be gathered. Altogether, aerial photogrammetry grew as a solution for numerous enigmas.

Now, let’s Jump on to the different types of Aerial Photography.

Types of Aerial Photography

Various factors are involved in the classification of the types of aerial photographs. These are generally classified based on the camera axis, the scale of a picture, etc.

Based on the camera axis

So based on the camera axis the pictures are categorized into three kinds

  • Vertical Photographs

  • Low Oblique Photographs

  • High Oblique Photographs

  • Vertical Photographs

Vertical photographs are one of the kinds based on the camera axis.

To understand Verticle photographs let’s go through some of these points.

At the flying height, these pictures cover comparatively less area than the oblique photographs.
Vertical photographs are a considerable substitute for maps.
Capturing this type of Photographs can be a difficult task because of the turbulence of the aircraft.
Most of the pictures are taken by slightly tilting the camera axis. So these images are also called as tilted photographs.
Also, Photographs that are tilted less than 3 degrees are considered to be vertical photographs(tilt should be no more than 3 degrees).

LOW OBLIQUE PHOTOGRAPHS

Low oblique photographs are captured by tilting the camera axis deliberately. The tilt is generally more than 3 degrees in this type of photograph. The visibility of the Horizon is absent in low oblique photographs. The Horizon is the line where it appears that the sky and the earth are joining in the picture.

HIGH OBLIQUE PHOTOGRAPHS

High oblique photographs clicked with a large amount of tilt. This type of photograph helps the viewers to comprehend the image better. That is the result of the transparent visibility of the photograph. The Horizon is also noticeable in these photographs as the coverage range is more in these pictures than in vertical Photographs. In addition to this, oblique Photographs generally do not have uniformity in the scale.

Advantages of Aerial Photography

The field of photography is full of creativity and adventure. Every piece of work is unique in itself, and this field requires the use of the right types of equipment as it helps to come up with some great photos.

The professionals in aerial photography come up with some exceptional pieces of work that are very beneficial and helpful.

So let’s dive in to see how aerial photography is helpful.

Aerial photography has proved to be one of the best marketing tools, especially in schools. This technology can efficiently serve the schools. The photographs can be used for the yearbook, brochures, etc.
For construction, no other tool is more useful than aerial photography. For infrastructural growth, this technology is very imperative.
Businesses can flourish by using aerial photography, especially in promotion activities, as it eases in inviting customers.

There are endless applications of aerial photography. With its multiple functions in geology, archaeology, etc it is serving in almost every field related to research or otherwise.

Without wasting any time further, let’s go through some applications of aerial photography.

Applications of Aerial photography
In Archaeology

Aerial photography is perfect for discovering lost monuments and tracking them. It helps researchers to find features that are not noticeable at the ground level and are under the soil. The low profile monuments sometimes may look like the bumps from the ground level and can be considered as not so important. But, these monuments when viewed from above the sky, their appearance can be comprehended in a better way.

Nature and Wildlife

Aerial photos are a fabulous means for campaigning and for spreading awareness about nature and wildlife. The pictures promote information to make people aware of the changes taking place in our environment.

Aerial photography also helps to recognize the changes or threats to wildlife and the environment. The sky-high perspective can detect many factors that cannot be determined otherwise from the ground level.

Movie production and Advertisements

To improve the quality of the movies and advertisements aerial imagery is used quite extensively. In movie production, different techniques are applied to capture beautiful aerial shots. This undoubtedly enhances the mood, details, and make it extraordinary.

Now, let’s discuss something about aerial interpretation.

Aerial photography Interpretation

Photographic images are reviewed for identifying objects and determining their importance. This is known as Photographic Interpretation.

Aerial interpretation principles have been modified for more than 150 years. This technique is in use nowadays.

Some of the elements of image interpretation are location, shape, tone/color, size, texture, height/depth, and situation/site.

Based on these elements, interpretation, and analysis of aerial photographs are done.

360-degree aerial photography

360- degree aerial photography is also known as a Virtual tour. It is a great example of innovation in technology. It shows how science can take you places.

The virtual tour is an image of a particular location that can be viewed in a 360-degree angle. It includes still images or videos which can be viewed by people from anywhere around the world. It seems like you have entered the screen and enjoying the scenic view of the image. Some videos also possess sound effects that make the experience more delightful.
